  wonky woven vase
as part of my models class, i created a distorted paper vase, woven out of laser cut paper strips. the model is based on an initial smooth surfaced vase which is then turned in to planar quads.

due to our use of the alternating black and white tiling, i was inspired by beetlejuice to create a vase that would appear vastly different from different angles, hiding its distortion and surprising viewers in its rotation.

this method could also be used to convert other curves into flat pieces which opens a variety of construction and material possibilities that are sometimes obscured by form.

digitization
with any smooth-surfaced model, such as a vase, the smooth sections can be split into planar pieces. in the below model, the planes are deliberately created as quads, allowing for the checkerboard pattern which enables the weaving construction method.

the final model was quite faithful to its digital reference, successfully creating a dynamic profile from various angles.
